About New Zealand

It's your turn to discover New Zealand.

New Zealand was the world's last major landmass to be discovered and much of it remains as it was before human settlement.

With 14 national parks and a third of the country (more than five million hectares) protected in parks and reserves, there are plenty of opportunities to experience an unspoiled primeval landscape where humans have had only minimal impact.

It's not just the scale of wilderness areas available to New Zealanders, but the variety of different landscapes and vegetation that makes New Zealand a great place to experience the outdoors.

With a temperate climate and completely surrounded by ocean, New Zealand's landscape ranges from golden sand beaches to rugged mountains, volcanoes, rainforests, lakes, rivers and fjords.

Home to only 4.15 million people New Zealand is also one of the World's least crowded countries. Founded on a treaty between the indigenous Maori and British settlers, New Zealand has grown to become a strong and proudly independent country.

New Zealand's relative youth as a country, coupled with its dependence on immigration, tourism and trade have created a uniquely outward looking country. While no country is universally open and friendly - New Zealand is certainly one of the world's most accepting and warmly multicultural countries.
